Programs

Psychiatric Services

Board-certified psychiatrists and Nurse Practitioners provide psychiatric evaluations, medications monitoring, and therapeutic follow-up for children and adults. These individuals play a key role in the treatment teams for the consumers.

Substance Abuse Services

Outpatient individual and group treatment is available for DUI education and treatment; treatment for multiple substance abuse issues; gender-specific substance abuse; co-occurring (substance abuse and mental health) issues; and intensive outpatient therapy. Services are offered in both Spanish and English. Family involvement is emphasized whenever possible. Peer and Family Support are offered. Counseling can be provided in the home, in the community, or in the office.

Southwest Recovery Center: Residential treatment facility which serves chemically-dependent individuals who have not succeeded in outpatient treatment. Family involvement is emphasized whenever possible. Case management and support is integral to the program. Normal length of stay is 28 days but treatment is individualized to the needs of the consumer.

Individual, Family & Group Counseling

Individual, family, and group counseling is available for children, adolescents, and adults. The emphasis is placed on recognizing and building on strengths, using solution-focused approaches. The primary treatment focus is on symptom reduction and improvement of personal, family, and vocational/educational functioning. Services are offered in both English and Spanish by qualified clinicians. Peer and Family Support are offered. Counseling can be provided in the home, in the community, or in the office.

Child and Family Teams/Adult Clinical Teams Facilitation of treatment teams to enhance the consumer's recovery and foster the development of natural and community supports is provided. The intent is to empower the other team members to take on the facilitation once the consumer is on the road to stability.

Case Management

Wrap-around and support services are provided based on consumers' unique needs to allow adults, children, and families to live as independently as they are able. Peer Support and Family Support may also play a role.

Psychosocial Rehabilitation

Supervised Day Program, 3 hours per day, 1-5 days per week, for adults with severe mental illness to allow individuals to restore, maintain, or improve functional skills necessary to achieve maximum personal growth. Consumers referred to the program require structure and are taught skill building in areas such as management of their illness and communication. Consumers receive instruction in those modules seen to be of benefit to them in developing a more independent life.

Crisis Intervention

Two-person mobile crisis teams in Yuma County consisting of a Master's level clinician and a behavioral health technician. The teams are dispatched to evaluate individuals who have been determined to be experiencing a crisis. Referrals are made to the appropriate level of care for the individual which may include hospitalization, the development of a safety plan, and/or intensive outpatient counseling. Teams are on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Rapid Response system in LaPaz County. A Behavioral Health Professional is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to be dispatched when necessary to evaluate individuals who have been determined to be experiencing a crisis. Referrals are made to the appropriate level of care for the individual which may include hospitalization, the development of a safety plan, and/or intensive outpatient counseling.

Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

EAPs are confidential, effective, early intervention programs operating in the workplace. These programs address work-related personnel issues which affect productivity; i.e. they provide management with the means to offer assistance to employees and their families who are struggling with alcoholism or other substance abuse, emotional problems, and/or other human issues that impact on health and job performance. EAPs assist employees and where appropriate their supervisors and peers to resolve issues. Employees and family members of EAPs contracting for counseling services with EXCEL may also receive additional referrals to community resources.

Peer Support Groups

Club 57, a recovery model that provides peer support, structure, and socialization for adult consumers. Activities are planned and run by consumers, with the oversight of a clinical staff person.

Sub-Acute Facility

JCAHO-accredited Level 1 Facility which provides treatment to adults age 18 and older experiencing acute behavioral health symptoms, to restore stability and return the person to the community as quickly as possible. The SAF is staffed to acuity, with a minimum of one RN on duty, and a Board-certified Psychiatrist available 7 days a week. In addition to crisis intervention and medical stabilization, there are also psychoeducational groups offered to assist the individuals to better manage their illnesses.

Residential Services

Level II Group Homes - Residential homes are offered for consumers who are seriously mentally ill, Title XIX, and meet the criteria of needing short-term supervision and therapeutic activities to enable them to move on to a more independent life.

Vocational Services

Working with DES/RSA Vocational Rehabilitation, this program for adults who are seriously mentally ill provides work adjustment training, supported employment, and job development/placement in an integrated community setting. The Excel vocational services department also provides pre-employment services to the consumers. In addition EXCEL has in-house training for consumers in the areas of food service, vehicle maintenance, laundry, lawn maintenance, housekeeping, and general maintenance.

Community Relations

Prevention

The EXCEL group provides hands-on development, management and support of effective and sustainable prevention programs in the Yuma, Wellton, San Luis and La Paz Communities. Our prevention programs are based on the Arizona Department of Health Services/Division of Behavioral Health Service's (ADHS/DBHS) strategic goals for prevention of behavioral health problems and are grounded in a core set of values. The following are areas of greatest concern for the EXCEL group:

  • Suicide
  • Child Abuse and Neglect
  • Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug Abuse

RADAR

The EXCEL group is an Associate Regional Alcohol and Drug Awareness Resource Center (RADAR) site with the ability to disseminate information here locally. We are an affiliate of the State RADAR Center, and are sponsored by Substance Abuse & Mental Health Services Administration and the National Clearinghouse for Alcohol & Drug Information, or (SAMHSA's NCADI).
